Seventies Italian design: colour, plastic and nerve

A decade when furniture became a manifesto — and editions matter as much as forms.

Italy in the 1970s invented furniture that talks to architecture and advertising: inflated forms, saturated colours, industrial materials claimed rather than hidden.

Value here depends heavily on the edition. A single design may exist as original production, official reissue and copy: look for labels, markings moulded into the material and serial numbers.

On conservation, plastics require care. ABS and polyurethane yellow under UV and turn brittle; keep these objects away from south-facing windows and avoid solvents when cleaning.
