Hermine Biedermann-Arendts – Wildlife Scene with Game and Hunting Dogs (Oil on Canvas)

This remarkable large-scale oil on canvas (98 x 70 cm) is a masterful work by the German painter Hermine Biedermann-Arendts, a leading figure in 19th-century animal painting. Executed with exceptional anatomical mastery and a technique of rare finesse, this lively composition depicts two hunting dogs (a dachshund and a terrier) guarding a hunting trophy (a hare and birds). A pupil of the famous painter Heinrich von Zügel from 1875 onwards, the artist distinguished herself through her innovative approach: she liberated the animal from its mere symbolic function to make it a noble subject, brimming with expression and realism. Highly prized by the European aristocracy of her time, her work particularly captivated Empress Sissi of Austria-Hungary and Prince Leopold of Bavaria. Presented in its imposing wooden frame with a gilded patina (118 x 90 cm), this dramatic and highly detailed work is a collector’s item of exceptional museum quality.
