Biography

Gustave Doré, born in 1832 in Strasbourg and died in 1883 in Paris, was a French illustrator, painter, lithographer and sculptor. Beginning as a caricaturist at fifteen, he became one of the most prolific illustrators of his century, producing over ten thousand illustrations, notably for the Bible, Dante's Divine Comedy and Don Quixote. His designs were usually cut onto wood blocks by teams of specialist engravers.
