Biography

Born in Paris in 1813 into a family of cabinetmakers, Mathieu Béfort took over the family workshop on rue Neuve-Saint-Gilles and signed his work 'Béfort Jeune'. Specialising in Boulle-style marquetry and furniture inspired by Louis XIV and Louis XV, he won a medal at the 1844 industrial exhibition and became a supplier to Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie. His workshop was taken over by the cabinetmaker Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener.
