Biography

German painter born 27 February 1803 in Dessau and died 8 January 1864 in Berlin, specialising in marine and landscape painting. Trained under Carl Wilhelm Kolbe and then at the Dresden Academy, he settled in Berlin in 1824, becoming a pupil of Karl Wilhelm Wach. Regarded as the first to introduce marine painting to Berlin, he travelled to Rügen, Norway, Holland, Normandy, England and the Mediterranean.
