Biography

Belgian-German painter born in Brussels on 27 August 1864 and died in Nonnenhorn (Bavaria) on 29 January 1951, specialising in landscapes, marines and views of the Belgian coast. Trained at the Brussels Academy, he was in 1883 a founding member of the avant-garde group Les XX. Influenced by Turner and then by Whistler during a stay in London in 1887, his style moved from Impressionism toward Neo-Impressionist and Symbolist concerns. He settled permanently in Germany after the invasion of Belgium in 1914.
