Biography

Born in Vilvoorde in 1779, Constantin Fidèle Coene trained under Henri Van Assche and later in Amsterdam under Pieter Bartholomeusz Barbiers, before becoming professor at the Brussels Academy in 1820, a post he held until his death. A painter of history, genre and landscape, he was also an etcher and lithographer; his painting A Soldier Returning from the Battle of Waterloo earned him wide recognition. He died in Brussels in 1841.
