Biography

Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870) was a Dutch painter, etcher and lithographer, one of the most influential landscape artists of his century. First trained as a gilder and framemaker, he refined his skills under Joannes Breckenheimer in The Hague and studied Jacob van Ruisdael. He became known for his winter scenes and frozen canals with skaters, winning a gold medal in Antwerp in 1819. Johan Barthold Jongkind was among his pupils.
