Biography

Émile Gallé was born on 4 May 1846 in Nancy, son of glassware and ceramics merchant Charles Gallé. Trained in Weimar and Meisenthal, he took over the family business in 1877 and expanded into cabinetmaking in 1885. A botanist, he drew inspiration from nature for his glass, ceramic and furniture creations, winning a Grand Prix at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. In 1901 he founded and chaired the École de Nancy. He died on 23 September 1904 in Nancy.
