Biography

Étienne Avril, known as Avril l'Aîné, was born in 1748 in Paris. Received as a master cabinetmaker on 23 November 1774, he established his workshop on the rue de Charenton in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. He produced furniture for the Court, including for Queen Marie-Antoinette, characterised by mahogany panels framed with bronze mouldings. His brother Pierre Avril, also a cabinetmaker, took over the workshop after his death on 24 June 1791.
