Biography

Born in Paris in 1714 into a family of carpenters, Jean-Baptiste Pigalle trained under Robert Le Lorrain and then Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne. Admitted to the Académie Royale in 1744 with his Mercury Fastening His Sandals, he became one of the most celebrated sculptors of his day, author of the nude Voltaire and the tomb of Marshal Saxe in Strasbourg. He died in Paris in 1785.
