Born in Valenciennes in 1671, Jean-Baptiste Vanmour trained in the studio of Jacques-Albert Gérin before accompanying the Marquis de Ferriol, French ambassador, to Constantinople in 1699. There he painted around a hundred portraits, published from 1714 as engravings in the Recueil Ferriol. He remained in Turkey until his death in 1737, becoming a major pictorial witness to the Ottoman Empire during the Tulip Era.
