Biography

Son of the cabinetmaker Louis Montigny, Philippe-Claude Montigny was born in Paris in 1734 and became a master cabinetmaker in 1766. The 1778 Almanach dauphin ranked him among the most renowned makers of furniture in tortoiseshell and brass or ebony, in the manner of André-Charles Boulle. The royal administration entrusted him with restoring Louis XIV's medal cabinets. His works are held at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Musée Jacquemart-André. He died in Paris in 1800.
