Biography

Born in Tournai in 1744, Piat-Joseph Sauvage trained at the Antwerp Academy under Martin-Joseph Geeraerts. He specialised in grisailles and trompe l'oeil imitating bas-relief in marble or ivory. Admitted to the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1783, he became painter to the Prince de Condé and then to Louis XVI, and worked for the Sèvres manufactory. He died in Tournai in 1818.
