Biography

Gyula Tornai (1861–1928) was a Hungarian painter specialising in Orientalist subjects. Trained at the academies of Vienna and Munich and then under Gyula Benczúr in Budapest, he was influenced by the style of Hans Makart. Following travels to Spain, Algeria and Morocco, he turned to depicting street life, markets and harems. He travelled to India and Japan from 1905. His works are held in the Hungarian National Gallery.
