Biography

Alessandro Algardi was born on 31 July 1595 in Bologna, where he trained under Agostino Carracci. He worked in Mantua before settling in Rome in 1625, where he restored ancient statues for Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi. He became one of the principal rivals of Bernini, noted for his portrait busts. His most celebrated work is the tomb of Pope Leo XI in St Peter's Basilica, completed in 1644. He died in Rome on 10 June 1654.
