Biography

Born in Ghent in 1884, the son of a furniture maker, Maurice Langaskens studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels (1901–1905) under Constant Montald. His early Symbolist and Art Nouveau work preceded his captivity as a prisoner of war in Germany (1914–1918), which marked his art, notably the In Memoriam series. Back in Brussels, he became a recognised engraver and illustrated several literary works. He died in Schaerbeek in 1946.
