Oil on canvas, bucolic scene by Maurice Langaskens, early 20th century

This oil painting on canvas, dating from the early 20th century, is a work by the artist Maurice Langaskens (1884–1943). The composition depicts a bucolic scene centred on a clear path leading into a verdant, undulating background. On either side of the path, dense vegetation combines trees with rounded foliage and flowerbeds in shades of pink, blue and yellow. A figure, seen from behind, walks down the centre towards a red wooden structure standing on the horizon. The brushwork, which is visibly fragmented, is composed of short juxtapositions of pigment. The canvas bears the signature ‘M. LANGASKENS’ inscribed at the bottom. The work is set in a moulded frame with a gilded patina.
