Caring for an antique without damaging it
Patina is fragile: a few simple habits are enough, and many products should be avoided.
An antique has survived two or three centuries precisely because it was rarely touched. Restraint is the first rule: a soft dry cloth and regular inspection are worth more than any treatment.
Twice a year, natural beeswax applied in a very thin layer and buffed will feed the wood without clogging it. Silicone sprays, industrial oils and household cleaners leave a glossy film that hides the patina and is very hard to remove.
The environment matters more than the products. Avoid direct sunlight, proximity to a radiator and sudden changes in humidity: those are what lift veneers and split panels.
