Carved from a single piece of lacquered and polychrome wood, enhanced with red and dark pigments, these remarkable Burmese statues from the Mandalay period embody the devotion and spiritual sobriety of the Theravāda Buddhist tradition. Representing young monks (or disciples) dressed in their fitted monastic robes (sanghati) and holding the traditional alms bowl (patta) with both hands, the work stands out for its refined lines and a face with a gentle, serene smile imbued with introspection. The original patina reveals the delicate lacquer work and subtle traces of gilding, testifying to ancient offering rituals and adding a striking historical presence to these major pieces of Southeast Asian sculpture.
