Lumachella stone and black marble carving, c. 1805

This circular bowl on a pedestal is crafted from fossil-bearing yellow lumachella stone. Dating from the very early 19th century (around 1805), this object originates from Italy. The flared bowl with a moulded rim rises from a baluster shaft, which in turn rests on a quadrangular base of black marble veined with white. The material reveals the characteristic texture of shell and fossil motifs. At the centre of the bowl, a circular moulded projection appears to form an omphalos in relief. The recorded dimensions indicate a height of 16 cm and a diameter of 20 cm. The piece combines the carving techniques used on Lumachella stone and black marble, illustrating the production of hard stone in Italy around 1805.
