This pair of bronze sculptures with a variegated brown patina depicts two armed men in 17th-century-inspired dress, wearing plumed hats and holding swords. Standing 37 centimetres high, the figures display careful chasing on the folds of the fabrics, the doublets and the fittings. Each figure stands on a circular moulded base. Both casts bear the signature of the sculptor Pierre-Louis Detrier on the base, together with the mark « E. TASSEL editeur ». A regular exhibitor at the Salon between 1866 and 1896, Detrier worked within the tradition of French figurative sculpture of the second half of the 19th century.
