Antique side tables: the pieces that change a room

Small pieces make the big changes. An antique side table where there was nothing gives a room a point of gravity — and it is the category where antiques beat new furniture outright.

The guéridon first. A central stem, a round or octagonal top, born to hold a candle or a cup: it fits anywhere, by an armchair, in a hall, at the corner of a sofa. In Empire mahogany or 19th-century fruitwood it often costs less than its mass-produced new equivalent.

The work table next, a 19th-century piece: a compartmented top, sometimes marble, narrow drawers. Reborn as a bar, a dressing table, a living-room tidy, it brings a marquetry no modern piece offers at this price.

Finally the end table, a modern category the antique world supplies easily: low tables in period styles, 1930s nest tables, small consoles. The rule of choice is the same as everywhere: sound structure, a top without irreversible water marks, a height matched to its use — about 55 cm beside a sofa, 70 beside a bed.

The small piece is also the best school for the eye: at this price level you can compare two pieces, buy, live with one, resell without risk. That is how every collector starts.
