Gouache on paper, England, late 18th century

This gouache on paper was produced in England in the late 18th century. The work, by an unidentified artist, employs the technique of gouache painting on paper. The composition depicts a neo-Gothic building featuring pointed arch windows, turrets and ornamental elements, set within a wooded park designed according to the principles of the English landscape garden. In the foreground, a walker is depicted sitting alongside a dog. The whole is set within a gilded wooden frame which clearly shows signs of wear to the gilding. The paper also appears to have slight foxing. The work measures 22 cm wide by 17 cm high and originates from England. This piece is representative of the 18th-century English landscape movement, designed to appear natural whilst being carefully laid out.
