Description
Made by a Parisian cabinetmaker in the late 19th century, this commode is inspired by the piece created in 1775 by Jean-Henri Riesener for Louis XVI's bedchamber at Versailles, now held at the musée Condé in the château de Chantilly. The front features a central marquetry panel depicting a vase of flowers, framed by geometric motifs in purpleheart and stained woods. The gilt-bronze mounts comprise warrior terms on the uprights, garlands, putti and a motif bearing the arms of France on the apron. The piece is surmounted by a brèche d'Alep marble top shaped to follow the stepped outline of the case.
