"Village fair" by Constantin Fidèle Coene

This oil on panel depicts a scene entitled ‘Village Festival’. Executed in the early part of the 19th century, the work belongs to the Flemish School and is signed lower right by Constantin Fidèle Coene. The composition presents a lively genre scene with groups of figures dancing and drinking beside thatched cottages. The fine, detailed brushwork brings out the figures’ expressions and costumes. The panel measures 34 cm high by 42 cm wide, and 48 cm by 55 cm including the frame. The painting is in very good condition. It is rooted in the picturesque tradition of the early 19th-century Flemish School.
