Portrait of a Young Man, an Orientalist painting by Gyula Tornai, 1890

This Orientalist-style painting was produced in 1890 by the Hungarian painter Gyula Tornai (1861–1928). The work depicts a bust portrait of a young man dressed in a bright orange shirt beneath a striped caftan in shades of purple and champagne, embellished with fine embroidery. The subject wears a white headdress with coloured trim, a traditional form of sun protection in North Africa. His face is characterised by half-closed eyelids, suggesting a state of relaxation or contemplation. The painting forms part of the body of work by the artist, who trained at the academies in Vienna and Munich, and whose career was marked by numerous travels and a ten-year stay in Morocco.
