Renaissance-style stele in painted and gilded wood, 18th century

This Renaissance-style stele, dating from the late 18th century, around 1800, is crafted from wood painted to resemble white marble and gilded with gold leaf. The central cylindrical shaft features a sculpted twisted motif emphasised by a gold-accented ribbon and surmounted by rings adorned with acanthus leaf motifs. It supports a circular top in ‘noir de Theux’. The base comprises carved elements depicting ‘antique porphyry’ feet, resting directly on a plinth carved from ‘noir de Theux’. The ornamentation combines the techniques of gold leaf gilding, faux marble, and the use of ‘noir de Theux’ and ‘antique porphyry’.
