This ceremonial Japanese vase impresses with its theatrical presence and the visual richness of its decor. Of a baluster shape with generous lines, it features a sumptuous polychrome composition typical of the Arita tradition. The belly is punctuated by grandiose cartouches in the form of open fans, hand-painted with bouquets of peonies and flowering branches. These scenes stand out against a deep cobalt blue background, enhanced by a profusion of scrolls and fine gold highlights. The alternation between night blue, vibrant iron red, and golden gleams gives this piece a hypnotic depth, ideal for enhancing a prestigious interior.
Provenance and Historical Context: Crafted in Japan in the mid-18th century (Edo period), this vase belongs to the golden age of Imari porcelain exports destined for European palaces and grand castles. It comes from an important private European collection passed down through descent. A commissioned piece of exceptional rarity for its dimensions, it still bears a handwritten historical inventory mark (K/1243/40) under its collar, testifying to its registration in the collections of a great aristocratic residence in the last century.
Condition of Conservation: Superb overall condition for a three-century-old object. The porcelain retains all its structural integrity, without any cracks or chips. The polychrome enamels are extremely vibrant, and the gilding on the glaze shows remarkable freshness, with very slight poetic signs of wear on the collar. A perfectly preserved museum-quality art piece.
