Description

This mercury barometer and thermometer from the Louis-Philippe period is distinguished by its hexagonal gilded wooden frame. The frame is decorated with scrollwork and volutes, surmounted by a stylised lyre adorned with foliage, which houses the thermometer. Operating on the principle of the mechanism devised in 1644 by the Italian scientist Evangelista Torricelli, this instrument displays both the time and the temperature. The dial is signed by Xavier Binda. The piece measures 38 cm in length and 54 cm in height. Preserved in very good condition, this object combines scientific precision with the decorative elegance of the 19th century.
