Pair of marble and gilded bronze ‘cassolettes’ candlesticks, Louis XVI style

This pair of candlesticks in the form of cassolettes is crafted from gilded bronze and white marble. Dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, this set is in the Louis XVI style. Each piece rests on a square white marble base supported by four gilded bronze spindle legs. The central marble column is crowned by a chiselled and gilded bronze bowl, adorned with floral garlands, acanthus leaves and plant motifs. The rectangular side handles evoke classical architectural motifs. The bowls are topped with a removable lid crowned by a cypress-apple-shaped knob. On the reverse of the bases, the threaded rod assembly is visible. Slight wear to the gilding is visible in places on the bronze.
