Pair of gilded bronze candlesticks, Directoire period

This pair of gilded bronze candlesticks dates from the Directoire period. The structure comprises a chiselled shaft rising from a tripod base formed of three winged sphinxes. The upper section features a bowl with antique-style decoration, adorned with owl motifs symbolising wisdom. Fine chains suspended from the upper cup hold various gilded bronze maintenance tools. This rigorous ornamental style is characteristic of the Directoire period. Each candlestick is 23 cm high. Signs of wear and tear and discolouration of the gilding are clearly visible on all parts.
