Pair of Athenian incense-burner side tables, c. 1820

This pair of Athenian side tables, designed as incense burners, is crafted from garnet-red lacquered wood, gilded wood and gilded brass. Dating from the early 19th century, around 1820, these tripod pieces of furniture rest on a base adorned with goat’s heads at the top of each upright, ending in gilded wooden goat’s feet. The upper band features a decoration of beads and godrons carved into the wood. Each piece is topped with an openwork lid in gilded brass, crowned with a pomegranate-shaped finial. The set comprises a structure held together by a moulded circular cross-brace. These pieces measure 90 cm in height and have a diameter of 52 cm.
