Still Life with Fruit and a Roemer, Antwerp, 17th century

This painting depicts a still life executed in oil on canvas in the 17th century in Antwerp. The work is organised around a central cartouche extending across the composition, at the heart of which stands a roemer typical of Germanic Europe containing white wine. The composition features a detailed array of precisely painted fruits, including, in particular, lemons from Menton, lychees, Mollar pomegranates from Elche, plums from Leuven and Thuin, ‘Venus’s Nipples’ peaches and ‘Kernechter vom Vorgebirge’ peaches, as well as grey Saint-Jean figs and bunches of Corinthian and Chasselas grapes from Bar-sur-Aube. The roemer reveals fine droplets beading on the base. The work measures 135 cm in height and 140 cm in width.
