Pair of lacquered armchairs from the Directoire period

This pair of red and black lacquered wooden armchairs dates from the Directoire period. The seat, backrest and armrest pads are upholstered in the ‘Budapest Carmine’ fabric produced by Pierre Frey. The backrest features a ‘gendarme’s hat’ profile, topped by a triangular pediment adorned with a sculpted rosette at the centre of a diamond-shaped motif. The armrests are extended by a carved Greek frieze motif. The chair rests on an original tapered base. The dark lacquered surface shows signs of wear and loss of material in places, revealing the underlying wood.
