Pair of bronze candlesticks from the Directoire period

This pair of candlesticks in gilded bronze and gunmetal-patinated bronze from the Directoire period depicts two vestal virgins bearing light. The sculpture in the round contrasts the dark patina of the drapery with the gilding of the vases and bases. The female figures, dressed in ancient-style tunics, hold the vase-shaped bowl with both hands, whilst the circular base features a chiselled decoration of guilloché patterns and mouldings. The pieces measure 40 cm in height and 12 cm in diameter. The iconography of the Vestal Virgins is part of the Neoclassical movement of the late 18th century.
